For over 30 years, I have had the privilege of working as a clinical hypnotherapist, helping people overcome fears, phobias, and addictions, enhance their mindset, and unlock the magic of personal transformation. Even after decades in practice, I wake up each day excited to support my clients, knowing that hypnosis is a profound and effective tool for change.
Hypnosis is often misunderstood, but at its core, it is a state of focused attention where the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions. It is an art—an intricate weaving of direct suggestion, metaphor, and subconscious dialogue that allows individuals to step into their power, release old patterns, and embrace new ways of thinking and being.
What Hypnosis Really Is (And What It Isn’t)
Contrary to the myths portrayed in movies, hypnosis is not mind control. It is not about making someone cluck like a chicken or act against their will. Instead, it is a collaborative process where the client remains in full control, deeply relaxed yet fully aware.
Hypnosis taps into the subconscious mind—the part of us that holds our deepest beliefs, emotions, and habits. When we access this state, we can bypass limiting thought patterns and introduce new, empowering beliefs. This is why hypnosis is so effective for overcoming fears, breaking addictive behaviours, reducing stress, and even improving performance in sports, business, and creative endeavours.
The Many Tools of a Hypnotherapist
A skilled hypnotherapist has a diverse toolkit of techniques to help clients achieve deep transformation. These include:
• Direct Suggestion: Simple, clear affirmations to reinforce positive change.
• Metaphor and Storytelling: Engaging the subconscious through imagery and narrative.
• Age Regression: Revisiting past experiences to heal emotional wounds.
• Parts Therapy: Speaking to different aspects of the psyche to resolve internal conflicts.
• Ideomotor Responses: Using subconscious signals to uncover hidden emotions.
• Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP): Reframing thoughts and patterns to create new perspectives.
Over the years, I’ve seen many “new” hypnotherapy methods emerge—often rebranded with flashy names and marketed as breakthroughs. Yet, when I look closer, they all rest on the same foundational principles I was taught over three decades ago. The fundamentals of hypnosis remain unchanged because they work. That is why I am passionate about teaching my students these core techniques so they have the freedom to adapt and tailor their approach to each client, rather than being constrained by a rigid script or trend.
Why Being a Clinical Hypnotherapist is So Rewarding
There are few careers as fulfilling as clinical hypnotherapy. Every day, I witness people breaking free from limiting beliefs, conquering lifelong fears, and stepping into their best selves. The joy of seeing a client leave my office feeling lighter, more confident, and empowered is something that never fades.
